Michigan city scape in grey

Is Michigan an at-will employment state, and can I be fired without a reason?

Yes, Michigan is an at-will employment state. That means an employer can generally terminate you without giving a reason, and you can leave a job without one too. But "at-will" has limits, and those limits matter.

Your employer cannot fire you for an illegal reason, even in an at-will state. That includes:

  • Discrimination based on race, sex, religion, disability, age, or other protected categories under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act
  • Retaliation for reporting illegal activity, protected under the Michigan Whistleblower Protection Act
  • Retaliation for filing a workers' compensation claim
  • Violating an existing employment contract or collective bargaining agreement

If you were let go and something about the timing or reasoning feels off, that instinct is worth listening to. A free case evaluation can help you understand whether your termination crossed a legal line.
