What is the Equal Pay Act of 1963, and what does it aim to achieve?

The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) is a landmark federal law aimed at eliminating wage discrimination based on sex. It was enacted as an amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and requires that men and women be paid equally for performing jobs that require substantially equal skill, effort, and responsibility under similar working conditions within the same workplace.

The Act was introduced at a time when women were systematically paid less than men for doing the same work, despite having comparable qualifications and responsibilities. The EPA strives to ensure that wages are determined fairly, based on the nature of the work and not the gender of the employee. By promoting pay equity, it aims to narrow the wage gap and foster workplace equality, helping to address systemic economic disparities between men and women.
