Over the past few months, our team at Marko Law has been working tirelessly to uncover the truth behind one of the most egregious privacy breaches in collegiate sports history. What began as a troubling allegation against former University of Michigan assistant football coach Matt Weiss has now escalated into a full-blown federal investigation that confirms what we feared: this wasn’t just an internal error. It was a calculated violation of trust.
According to a recent release from the U.S. Department of Justice, federal investigators have now seized thousands of intimate photos and videos from Weiss's devices — many of which were allegedly accessed without consent from student-athletes at the University of Michigan and beyond. This isn’t just about stolen data. This is about young athletes whose privacy, safety, and dignity were completely disregarded by someone they were told to trust.
CBS Sports also recently reported on the depth of the invasion. According to their article, Weiss allegedly used multiple tactics to access protected information, including infiltrating university-maintained athletic systems like the Keffer Development Athletic Trainer System (ATS). This is horrifying.
And sadly, the number of victims continues to grow. Federal officials have indicated that over 150,000 student-athletes nationwide may have had their private information compromised. Of those, at least 3,300 athletes at the University of Michigan are believed to be directly affected.
Let me be clear: Marko Law will not let this go unchallenged.
