Michigan city scape in grey

Can you legally lane split on a motorcycle in Michigan?

No. Lane splitting, riding a motorcycle between lanes of stopped or slow-moving traffic, is illegal in Michigan. State law requires motorcycles to operate within a single lane like any other vehicle.

This matters after a crash. If you were lane splitting when a collision occurred, an insurance company may try to use that against you to reduce or deny your claim under Michigan's modified comparative fault rules. That does not automatically mean you have no case, but it does mean the details matter.

If you were injured while riding, even if fault feels complicated, it is worth having someone review the facts before you accept an insurance company's version of events.
