If you believe a police officer abused their power, you have the right to speak up.
Here’s how to file a complaint:
- Go to the department’s Internal Affairs unit—most departments in Michigan have one.
- Submit your complaint in writing. Include dates, times, badge numbers (if known), witnesses, and any evidence.
- Follow up. Departments are required to investigate—but that doesn’t always mean justice is served.
If your complaint involves excessive force, racial profiling, illegal search, or injury, filing an internal report is just the first step. You may have a legal claim under Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/42/1983).
At Marko Law, we’ve sued police departments across Michigan—including for taser abuse, wrongful arrests, and more. We know their playbook—and we don’t back down.
