Michigan city scape in grey
Marko Law Firm

How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Michigan?

In Michigan, the clock starts ticking the day you’re injured. You generally have:

  • 3 years from the date of injury to file a lawsuit (per Michigan Compiled Laws § 600.5805)
  • 2 years for wrongful death cases
  • 6 months for claims against government entities (like city buses or public buildings)

But there are exceptions—especially if you’re a minor, mentally incapacitated, or didn’t discover the injury right away.

Don’t wait. Delays can destroy your case. And insurance companies are betting you’ll miss your window.
