How long does a trucking company have to keep accident records?

Federal regulations require trucking companies to keep certain records for specific periods of time, but the timelines vary depending on the type of document. Driver logs, for example, typically must be kept for six months. Maintenance records may need to be kept longer.

Here's the challenge: many of these records can be destroyed once the retention period passes, and trucking companies don't always wait to see if a lawsuit is coming. That's why sending a preservation letter quickly is so important. It legally requires the company to hold onto records they might otherwise be allowed to delete.

We move quickly on this step because once records are gone, they may be gone for good.
