What is quid pro quo in the workplace?

The term "quid pro quo" is a Latin phrase that means "something for something" or “this for that”. In the context of workplace harassment, quid pro quo refers to a situation in which a person in a position of power or authority demands sexual favors or other benefits from an employee in exchange for employment opportunities or other job-related benefits. An example is an employer demanding sex for a job position or a promotion. Quid pro quo harassment occurs when a supervisor or someone in a position of power makes a job benefit (such as a promotion, raise, or continued employment) conditional on the victim's submission to unwelcome sexual advances or conduct. This type of harassment is illegal under federal and state employment laws, and victims may be entitled to damages and other remedies.
