Michigan's Whistleblowers' Protection Act (WPA) is designed to protect employees who report suspected violations of law or participate in investigations involving illegal activity.
Generally, employers cannot retaliate against employees for:
- Reporting legal violations to government agencies
- Participating in government investigations
- Being asked to participate in legal proceedings
- Refusing to engage in unlawful conduct under certain circumstances
Retaliation can include termination, demotion, discipline, reduced hours, harassment, or other adverse employment actions.
The purpose of whistleblower protections is to encourage employees to report wrongdoing without fear of losing their livelihoods.
