Detroit Resources
City department that investigates discrimination complaints under Detroit's civil rights ordinance, handles ADA grievances against the City, and provides language access help for residents with limited English.
CRIO is the City of Detroit's civil rights department, housed in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center downtown. Its Civil Rights Team takes complaints from residents and city employees and supports the Detroit Human Rights Commission.
Detroit's own ordinance covers some situations and protected groups beyond state and federal law, and the city process is free and local. It is also the place to raise accessibility and language barriers with city services.
There is a one-year window to file, and the incident must have occurred inside Detroit. Complaints can be filed through the online form linked on the Civil Rights Team page or by calling the department.
The discrimination must have happened within Detroit city limits in the past year, in a covered area such as employment, housing, education or a business open to the public, and be based on a protected characteristic.
