Detroit Resources
Shelter, legal aid, mental health care, and housing and job help for people who fled persecution and are seeking safety in the United States. Anyone with no safe place to stay can come in day or night.
Freedom House is a Detroit nonprofit that has housed and supported survivors of persecution for decades. Residents get a place to live and, in the same program, legal help with their case, counseling, health education and a path to work and housing.
People new to the country who have been hurt or wronged often have no family here and no idea where to turn. Freedom House offers a safe home and trusted guidance, so you are not facing a legal process alone.
Call or email first if you can; they respond within two business days. If you are in danger of sleeping outside, the site says you may come to the intake site at any hour. Some services are open to former residents without living there.
Designed for asylum seekers and others fleeing persecution; most services require living at Freedom House, and if they cannot serve you they will refer you elsewhere.
