Detroit Resources
Free civil legal help for low-income people in Detroit and the surrounding area, including eviction defense, foreclosure, public housing and Section 8 issues, and a program for veterans who are homeless or at risk.
LAD is one of Detroit's long-standing legal aid organizations. Its civil team helps qualifying residents with housing problems such as eviction, mortgage and tax foreclosure, land contract forfeiture and subsidized housing disputes, and it runs a dedicated program for veterans.
Housing and benefit problems often land on top of an injury or job loss. Having a free lawyer in an eviction or foreclosure case can change the outcome, and LAD is one of the main providers of Detroit's Right to Counsel eviction defense.
Start with the online intake form on ladadetroit.org; an intake specialist reviews it and calls you back about eligibility. If you need help with the form, call (313) 967-5800 during regular business hours.
Civil matters only, at no cost to people who qualify financially; LAD does not list criminal defense services and refers criminal matters elsewhere.
