Detroit Resources
State agency that investigates discrimination complaints in employment, housing, education, public accommodation and policing. You can file online, by phone or through the Detroit office at Cadillac Place.
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights enforces the state's civil rights laws, including the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and the Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act. Its Detroit office sits in the Cadillac Place state building in New Center.
Filing with MDCR is free and does not require a lawyer. It is often the first formal step when someone has been treated unfairly at work, in housing or by a business because of race, sex, disability, age, religion or another protected status.
There are filing deadlines, so do not wait to reach out. Start with the online public portal or the 800 number; the Detroit office can help in person but asks that you book an appointment first.
Investigates discrimination based on a protected characteristic under Michigan law; complaints generally must be filed within 180 days of the act, and the agency does not act as your private lawyer.
