State agency that handles unemployment benefit claims, protests and appeals. The Detroit local office at Cadillac Place offers in-person help by appointment, and phone and online help are available statewide.
The Unemployment Insurance Agency is the state office that pays unemployment benefits in Michigan. Its Detroit local office is in the Cadillac Place state building in New Center, and most claims are managed online through the MiWAM system.
Losing a job after an injury or a dispute with an employer can mean losing income overnight. Filing for unemployment promptly, and appealing on time if you are denied, protects money you may be owed.
Walk-ins are limited, so schedule an appointment online before visiting. Call later in the week if you can, since Mondays and Tuesdays have the longest waits, and keep copies of every notice the agency sends you.
Benefits depend on your work history and the reason you lost your job; the agency decides eligibility and you have limited time to protest or appeal a denial.
Spanish and Arabic options on the phone menu; translators for other languages; captioned virtual appointments for deaf or hard-of-hearing customers
