Detroit Resources
Free legal help for very low-income residents of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties in family law, landlord-tenant, public benefits, guardianship, immigration, debt and foreclosure matters.
The William Booth Legal Aid Clinic is the Salvation Army's only legal clinic in the country, located at the Harbor Light Center on Detroit's west side. For more than 25 years it has handled divorce and family law, landlord-tenant, public benefits, guardianship, immigration and consumer debt cases for people with very low incomes.
It is one of the few free providers that lists immigration and juvenile guardianship alongside housing and family law, and it serves the whole four-county area from a Detroit location.
Call the clinic to ask about screening; the website does not have an online application. Be ready to show that your household income is at or below the poverty guidelines.
Applicants must live at or below the national poverty guidelines and in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb or Washtenaw County; it handles civil matters, not criminal defense or injury claims.
