Law students supervised by faculty provide free legal help through clinics in family law, immigration, veterans law, criminal trial and appeals, conviction integrity, expungement, driver's license restoration and unemployment.
Detroit Mercy Law has run a clinical program for 60 years from its downtown riverfront campus. Student attorneys, supervised by faculty, handle real cases in areas such as family law, immigration, veterans benefits, criminal trials and appeals, juvenile appeals, expungement and license restoration.
Law school clinics can take cases that are too small or too specialized for other free providers, and they often give a client more time and attention than a busy legal aid office can. They are also a good fit for expungements and license restorations.
Call the clinic line to ask whether a clinic is currently accepting your type of case. Intake happens at the start of each semester and spots fill, so reach out early and have your paperwork organized.
Clinics follow the academic calendar and take limited cases that fit their teaching focus; several serve only low-income clients, and not every clinic runs every semester.
