Detroit Resources
Prosecutes physical abuse, neglect and major financial crimes against people 65 and older or vulnerable adults, including crimes in nursing homes and adult foster care facilities.
A dedicated unit inside the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office that vertically prosecutes crimes against older and vulnerable adults, meaning the same prosecutor stays with the case from charging through trial.
Elder abuse cases are easy to drop through the cracks. A specialized unit means someone understands exploitation, caregiver neglect and nursing home injuries and can hold the responsible person accountable.
The unit's own page tells victims and families to make a report with the local police agency first. For suspected abuse of a vulnerable adult it also lists the statewide 24-hour Adult Protective Services line, 1-855-444-3911.
Handles criminal cases only after a police report is made; it does not take civil cases, recover money directly or give legal advice to families.
